Seymour Margulies, J.S.C. (Ret.)

Of Counsel

Seymour Margulies, J.S.C. (retired), is Of Counsel to the law firm of Margulies Wind, P.A. Judge Margulies presided over trials in the Civil, Criminal and Family Divisions and Probate Part of the Chancery Division of the New Jersey Superior Court in the Hudson County Vicinage.  He retired after ten years at age 70 and then served on recall status for an additional eight years.

Judge Margulies practiced law as a trial and appellate attorney and counselor in association with Maurice C. Brigadier. He was admitted to the United States District Court of New Jersey in1950, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in 1956, the United States Supreme Court in 1963 and the United States Tax Court in 1984.  He is admitted to practice in the state courts of New Jersey, New York, Florida and Massachusetts. Prior to his judicial appointment, he either argued or briefed over 120 cases which are currently published in the National Reporter System.

Judge Margulies lectured at the Brigadier Bar Review Course in New Jersey from 1949 through 1974 when the course was renamed the Brigadier Margulies Bar Review Course and he continued teaching his bar preparation course through 1979.  He has lectured at the Margulies, Smith, Hart, McLaughlin Bar Review Course, various ICLE Seminars, New Jersey State Bar Appellate Practice Seminar, Hudson County Bar Association Seminar on Law and Equity, Hudson County Bar Association Seminar on Tort Claims Act, Suffolk Law School, Seton Hall Law School, New Jersey Judicial College, Orientation & Annual Seminars for newly admitted Municipal Court Judges.

Judge Margulies has been a member in the Hudson County Bar Association, previous Vice-Chair of the District Ethics Committee, previous Chair of the Judicial Selection Committee, Union County Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, Association of Federal Bar of New Jersey, Florida Bar Association, NJ Trial Lawyers Association (former, now ATLA), National Panel American Arbitration Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer. He was a member of the Inns of Court in Bergen, Hudson, and Monmouth counties and the Public Interest Law Center of New Jersey.

Judge Margulies is a past member of the Springfield Board of Education and served as Counsel from 1977-1983. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Union County Psychiatric Clinic, and currently serves as Counsel to the Springfield Public Library.

Judge Margulies was born and practiced law in Jersey City, N.J. He attended the University of Michigan from 1944 through 1945. He served honorably in the United States Navy from 1945-1946. After attending Rutgers University in 1947, he continued his education at Rutgers School of Law-Newark, where he was the Assistant Editor of the Law Review and graduated with Honors receiving his J.D. in 1950 and his L.L.M. in 1951,
